Saving Ranchers Investments

Saving Calves and Other Livestock one shot at a time!

The Eastern Oregon Livestock Producers and Wildlife Alliance was formed to address the growing concern of coyote predation on livestock and wildlife.  It started with local area ranchers in Northern Grant County that were experiencing and documenting increasing loses with calves during the calving season.  Starting or maintaining a profitable cow-calf operation is very difficult, protecting every calf is vitally important.  Concerned ranchers also have witnessed drastic declines in fawn survival in mule deer and pronghorn populations resulting in near all-time low herd counts.

The big question was what can be done about it.  Controlling the drastic increase in coyote numbers is very difficult.  We’ve used virtually all the methods available shooting, calling and trapping but with little if any noticeable results.  But that changed four years ago with a coordinated effort by local area ranchers filing for airborne coyote hunting permits via the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

The results were shocking to nearly all of us.  The sheer number of coyotes encountered in our localized area and an extremely effective rate of kill, which is 99%.  We flew a couple days in December then again in January and again in March.  Each month we kill nearly the same amount of coyotes as the previous month.  This relates directly to the winter conditions around the feed grounds and the topography of the area.  In the past four years we’ve removed 833 coyotes from these calving grounds.  The number of coyotes removed annually increased each year averaging over 200 per year.

Concluding results are that the area ranchers experienced a sharp drop in calf losses, many went to zero losses throughout the area, which was directly related to the aerial removal of coyotes.  As a byproduct we’ve witnessed a drastic increase in fawn survival relating to an increase in the overall herd composition.  By the numbers; doe to fawn survival rate by September increased from 20% to 110%.

In 1984 an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife three-year study of pronghorn-coyote predation proved that by aerially removing 50% of the coyote population from known fawning areas increased the fawn to doe ratio by 80%.  After three years of aerial removal of coyotes the study ended and the results were an 83% decline in fawn to doe ratio.  This study proved that aerial removal of coyotes is a very effective tool and that you must maintain it to protect the fawns.

Eastern Oregon Livestock Producers and Wildlife Alliance has partnered with Calf Savers, Calf Savers is a helicopter company that will provide aerial removal of coyotes from your calving grounds.  Our goal is to provide professional yet an affordable method of saving your livestock as well as protecting wildlife. Shotguns are the most effective and safest weapon used by our trained and experienced gunners.

We will also assist you with filling out the Airborne Hunting Permit issued by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.  Depending upon your calving season (December-May) determines the start date of the permit.  Each landowner must sign a permission form and document losses with previous methods used.  Contiguous properties can be listed on the same permit and require maps of the area.  Most permits issued are for a six month period.
